What is the difference between a free blog and a self-hosted blog?
A free blog is hosted and maintained by a platform, while a self-hosted blog uses separate hosting that you pay for and manage. Free blogs are easier to begin with, but they may limit your domain, design, advertising, and ownership options. Self-hosted blogs require more setup and maintenance, yet they provide greater control for a site intended to grow.
With a free blog, the platform supplies the hosting and usually gives you a basic address and a selection of templates. You can begin writing quickly because much of the technical work is handled for you. This is a reasonable option for a personal journal, a temporary project, or someone who wants to test the idea of blogging.
The tradeoff is control. The platform may limit custom designs, plugins, advertising, storage, or the ability to use your own domain. It may also have rules about the content and business activities allowed on the site. If the service changes its terms, your choices may change with it.
A self-hosted blog uses a separate hosting account. You generally register your own domain, install blogging software, choose a theme, and manage updates and backups. That takes more effort, but the site can be customized and expanded in ways that free services may not allow.
Self-hosted does not mean the site runs from a computer in your home. A hosting company stores the files on its servers and keeps the site available online. You are responsible for more of the blog's settings, although many hosting companies provide tools that make installation easier.
Choose free hosting when simplicity matters more than control. A self-hosted setup makes more sense when the blog is intended to become a long-term publication, business site, or source of income. Before deciding, review the platform's export options so you understand how difficult it would be to move your content later.
